Only You (And You Alone), 2023 is a 32-minute video collage and meditation that focuses on the concept of deluge through the lens of Far Rockaway, New York City. The film serves as a reaction to the gentrification of the area. It examines Far Rockaway's history through various significant events, including the rise and fall of the rapper Stack Bundles, the development of the Rockaways under figures like urban planner Robert Moses, and the devastating impact of ecological disasters like Hurricane Sandy.
Cochran immerses himself and the viewer in flood-related scenarios by incorporating archival audio and video samples. These include Stack Bundles flooding the streets with his music before his untimely demise, the flooding of people due to rapid urbanization and subsequent gentrification, and the literal flooding of the Rockaways caused by Hurricane Sandy. Each depicted critical moment leads to similar conclusions: the loss of resources and a decline in community morale leading to alienation and ultimately apathy.
Building upon Cochran's exploration of advanced industrial societies and their systems, seen his previous films Fusillade (2017), There Will Be Blood (2020), and Culture Lesson (2021) "Only You (And You Alone)" intertwines seemingly disparate subject matter, fostering opportunities for discourse and reflection.
